Match observations:
Monday Night Raw opened with footage of last night's stunning action from King
of the Ring, featuring stills of Brock Lesnar absolutely dismantling Rob Van Dam
and Test to win become the 2002 King of the Ring. Also shown were exciting
stills of the red-hot showdown between The Undertaker and HHH for the Undisputed
World Title, complete with involvement by The Rock.
The show began with an earlier shot of WWE Undisputed World Champion Undertaker
arriving via his beautiful Titan bike. Coming back to live footage, UT stalked
the halls looking for noted angry Texan Bradshaw and eventually finding him,
only to send the camera crew following him away and closing the door.
Good 'ol JR and Jerry "The King" Lawler pondered just what that meant before
reliving the action last night and noting that The Rock would be live at Raw
tonight and that Brock Lesnar was now in line for a shot at the Undisputed Title
at SummerSlam. JR announced that despite injuries, RVD would be in action
tonight and that an angry Eddie Guerrero and The Rabid Wolverine Chris Benoit
would be teaming up to face the unlikely combination of The Natureboy Ric Flair
and his KoTR savior, Buh Buh Ray Dudley.
In the back, that no-good Paul Heyman waited in an arena restroom while Brock
Lesnar used the facilities. Heyman regaled other bathroom users with tales of
the bathrooms he'd been in when creating superstars like The Undertaker and
until angry Texan Bradshaw arrived and chased everyone out of the
bathroom area. Bradshaw threatened Heyman until Lesnar finished his business,
at which Bradshaw told Lesnar that it was long past due since he and Lesnar
should have become acquainted and Bradshaw was going to show him "the ropes" in
the World Wrestling Fe...er, WWE. Brock Lesnar responded by kicking the shit out
of the angry Texan (thankfully, not literally, but you know how things have been
lately). Unluckily for Bradshaw, referee Brian Hebner had been using a stall at
the far end of the bathroom and ruled this a hardcore defense. The 2002 King of
the Ring massacred Bradshaw, slamming him through a stall door, trying to drown
him in a toilet and finally sending Bradshaw through a bathroom sink with his
stupidly named finisher, the F5. Paul Heyman taunted the badly beaten Bradshaw
by saying "I, Paul Heyman, manage the guy who just did that to you!"
Elsewhere, Chris Nowinski was proudly showing off his Harvard diploma to the
Bossman and Crash Holly when Tommy Dreamer happened by and ate the diploma.
JR tried to get an update on the status of Bradshaw but Coach informed him that
Bradshaw was nowhere to be found. In the background, the Undertaker lurked, then
took off when he noticed the camera had spotted him.
Booker T and Goldust took on The Hardy Boys in a pointle-- I mean, exhibition
tag match. The Book and Goldust appeared to have the match in hand when the
nWo came out. HBK distracted the referee while the nWo took out Black Gold and
even Jeff Hardy, but Matt Hardy was left alone to cover Goldust, which he did
reluctantly.
Tommy Dreamer took on Chris Nowinski in a grudge match over Nowinski's prized
(but apparently not very tasty) Harvard Diploma. Nowinski's mentor, William
Regal, interfered by using his brass knuckles to punch Tommy Dreamer in the
stomach, which in turn caused Dreamer to vomit all over Regal. Excuse me, to
hilariously vomit all over Regal. Luckily for Nowinski, Dreamer was all puked
out, so he was able to nail Dreamer and get the win. Oh man, you should have
seen the look on Regal's face! Well, the part that wasn't covered with human
vomit, that is!
In the back after the break, a still horrified William Regal was looking for
something to clean the zany vomit off and said "At least you got your bloody
university diploma back" before flinging some of the hurl onto Nowinski. As they
wandered off after that so-totally-worth-it payoff, the camera came upon Matt
Hardy and some EMTs who were checking on Jeff Hardy after his nWo beatdown.
Raven showed up and asked how Jeff was doing, but Matt Hardy suspected Raven was
up to no good and angrily chased him off.
Eddie Guerrero came to the ring and cut a pretty good promo complaining about
Buh Buh Ray Dudley's interference in his match last night against Ric Flair.
Chris Benoit then took the mic.
"Buh Buh Ray...uh, Dudley...you had, uh...no business getting in the, uh...the
business of Eddie Guerrero and myself, the Rabid Wolverine Chris Benoit, last
night at the King of the, uh, Ring pay per view television event. So tonight,
uh, Dudley...if you want to stand by Ric Flair, you can do it in a tag match.
Against us. And you know, Ric Flair, when an old HORSE breaks down, they have
to kill it. So guess what THAT means, Natureboy."
In the back, Arn Anderson and Ric Flair watched the interview. The Enforcer
asked Flair if he could trust that damned Dudley. Flair said everything would
be OK, but Arn reminded him that "a wise man once said 'Don't Trust Anybody'"
and Flair nodded. Then Jerry Lawler said "Who's he talking about, JR?" and JR
said "Somone who's dead to me, King!" Actually, JR didn't say that, but he
might has well have, damn corporate whore. Ah, what do I know? Maybe he's
hurting inside just like the rest of us. I miss you, Stone Cold!
After the break, Flair and Buh Buh Ray had a tremendous match against Benoit
and Guerrero. The match reached its peak when Flair and Benoit brawled to the
outside and both men busted each other open and then collapsed after brawling
through the crowd and back. In the ring, Dudley and Guerrero duked it out and
ended up battling on the turbuckles when Arn Anderson came out and clobbered
Eddy with a chairshot, sending him crashing down into the ring. Dudley turned
to thank Arn, but the Enforcer nailed Dudley with a chairshot, too, and Dudley
fell off the turnbuckles onto Guerrero. The ref missed this or something and
counted Eddy down for the pin while Arn left all four men in the ring area.
Raven took on Stevie Richards in a match, but lost when for reasons no one
could explain, Kevin Nash sauntered down to ringside and spooked Raven, who was
easy pickings for a quick Richards win. Nash then did an exaggerated pantomime
of the Hardy Boys "guns to the head" hand signal at Raven before wandering to
the back again.
The Rock arrived to a huge reaction from the Raw crowd and called out the
Undertaker for kicking him in the face at King of the Ring and forcing the
Rock to get involved in the match. The Undertaker was nowhere to be seen, but
cameras in the back eventually showed him watching the interview in a darkened
room, seemingly in hiding somewhere in the arena. The Rock said that the
Undertaker had two choices - either get in the ring with The Great One in a
title match tonight, or get the F out for good. JR reminded the Rock that he
doesn't work for the Raw Brand, but the Rock countered by saying "IT DOESN'T
MATTER WHAT BRAND THE ROCK WORKS FOR!" and JR had to concede that this was
pretty airtight logic on the Rock's part.
A brave Rob Van Dam came out to the ring for his scheduled intercontinental
title defense against D-Lo Brown. RVD was still suffering from the terrible
injuries he had sustained in the King of the Ring Finals against the awesome
power of Brock Lesnar. The injuries caught up to RVD when he blacked out while
on the top turnbuckle going for his spinning leg lariat and collapsed in a heap.
D-Lo Brown asked that the ref stop the match so that RVD could get immediate
medical attention and the match was declared a draw while D-Lo and the officials
helped the unconscious RVD to the back on a stretcher. JR said "Mah gawd, King"
in that solemn voice of his so we knew this was serious.
New WWE women's champion Molly Holly then came out for an in-ring interview
with Jerry Lawler. Lawler told Molly that he had been in contact with a doctor
who promised that he could perform an emergency assectomy on Molly. Molly then
kicked Lawler in the nuts and said that, since she was free to work on both
shows, she would never defend the title on Raw as long as Lawler was with the
company.
The Undertaker eventually showed up again at the end of the night and, while
looking around the arena nervously, agreed that he was hoss enough to accept
the challenge to slap The Rock around like a bitch. The Rock and UT put on an
exciting back and forth match until new King of the Ring Brock Lesnar and
Paul Heyman showed up on the stage. Lesnar was carrying the beaten Bradshaw
over his shoulder and flexed towards the ring before dumping Bradshaw over the
side of the stage to the floor below. A shocked Undertaker was caught off guard
with a Rock Bottom, and then The Rock challenged Lesnar to come down to the ring
but Heyman prevented him from doing so and lead Brock away. Rock was stopped
from going for the win, however, when HHH came in from the crowd and interrupted
the no DQ match by knocking the Rock out with a Pedigree and putting UT on top
of him for the win. HHH then posed until both men recovered and hit each with
a Pedigree. Jim Ross demanded to know why HHH was here, since he's a SmackDown
Brand wrestler, but HHH hit Ross with a Pedigree as the show ended.
